concept inherent in the endeavours of church missionary globalism.It characterises
a ‘chosen people’ or elitist ideology that brands all non-Abrahamic deities
and spirits as superstitions,as pre-logical errors,if you will.Morton Klass rightly characterises this concept of the supernatural as
authorising a Western cultural stance.He does so with admirable intellectual
integrity when he writes of:
the remorselessly unavoidable ethnocentric judgment of supernatural:that
there is on the one hand a natural—real—universe and on the other hand
there are notions about aspects of the universe that are situated outside
the natural and real and are therefore labeled supernatural by the person
who knows what belongs in which category.Inherent in what Klass identifies as an ethnocentric judgment is the frequently
encountered,although by no means inevitable,Christian claim that Jehovah,
Jesus,Satan,angels,cherubim,seraphim,and the living spirits of dead people
are not supernatural.In fundamentalist church belief,they constitute real,living,
natural entities,albeit with extraordinary attributes that approach and even
achieve omnipotence,omnipresence,and omniscience.If I may attempt a bit of
Derridean deconstruction,putting aside such subtleties as allowing for Judeo-
Islamic accommodations and for the success of missionaries in transplanting
such beliefs to distant places,in recent centuries at least,the term ‘supernatural’
implies a code of binary oppositions for Christians who accept the Bible as thetrue Word of God:the West/the rest,Christian/pagan,natural/supernatural,
true/false,superior/inferior.
As a concept deeply entrenched in Western thought,then,natural vs.supernatural
implies contradictory or competing worldviews that oppose the Christian
West,whose spiritual entities are thought of as natural,true,and superior to
the pagan rest of the world whose deities are supernatural,false,and inferior.
Thus deconstructed,one can readily acknowledge the ethnocentrism that Klass
identified.Scholars who are caught up in this worldview are bound to resist
blurring these oppositions,which brings us to Christianity in Iceland at the end
of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries.
