1 Many professors in China think that translation is the last thing people should do when communication
happens.I agree with that. But most times translation seems to be the very first and the only way to communicate. For example, someday you enter to The Royal Cakes, you cannot say "I want some fruit cakes." You should tell them "wo xiang yao dian shui guo dan gao."
2 Yes,for example,"long time no see" and "have not seen you for a long time" are both alright in English.Chinese people prefer the former one because its form/pattern looks like Hanyu "hen jiu bu jian".The latter one is also acceptable but "mei you jian guo ni hen jiu" feels weird.Like you say "niu" or "niu bi" in Chinese,Chinese people will know what you mean. But how to translate it to foreigners?Cattle?No.Super?Kinda.Newbie?Just for fun. When people are talking in their native language, they can neglect the existing of the linguistic form and just pay attention to the meaning/sense that transmitted by word or voice. How could we do the same thing with different languaes?
3 I think translation refer to the process in your head rather than what you're talking about.
It's best to just knów what your going to say in English, instead of thinking about it in Chinese and then translating it in your head, before you say it in English. That's when most errors occur.
